Sonography (Ultrasound) training (Ninh Thuan)

Why was it initiated?

The clinicians in Ninh Thuan have so little confidence in general radiology and sonography reports that they frequently do CT scans - even in small babies. We have always considered this a “bridge too far”. However, whilst acting as a translator during the 2022 trip to Ninh Thuan, Au became convinced he could help—wearing his other hat as an experienced sonographer in Australia. In addition, ultrasound has become integral to the skill-set of many clinicians - providing safer access for vascular access, fluid collections and biopsy.

What are its aims?

To improve competency for both clinicians and sonographers in the tasks they currently do or would like to do using ultrasound.

When did it start?

Active planning for this project began in mid 2023. Au travelled to Ninh Thuan in November 2024.

Who has been involved?

Ninh Thuan General Hospital

Administration: Dr Thach and Mrs Tuoi (PA to Dr Thach)

What’s happened?

IUS course 1.jpgn November 2024, and entirely on his own, Au managed 30 students over 2 weeks— doctors (radiology, oncology, renal, cardiac, Paediatric Intensive care (PICU), Adult intensive care (ICU). Neonatal Human 2.jpgintensive care (NICU) with a few nurses (ICU, radiology). No-one came from ED.
In Australia and VietNam, managing expectations is always a challenge and Au had his fair share of challenges.
Thirty (30) was FAR too many students, especially given their wide range of prior knowledge and skill.
We thank Dr Eduardo Uquillas (head of Veterinary anaesthesia, Sydney University) for his advice in anaesthetising the 3 pigs who gave students practice accessing vascular structures and body cavities. A few opportunistic procedures arose in ICU and PICU.

Dr Thach took a keen interest and arranged 3 meetings with Au and students during the course. Given the excellent feedback, Dr Thạch has ordered 3 new mobile machines (NICU, PIhuman 5.jpgCU and ICU) so staff can develop clinical experience.

US course 2.jpgProgressive Evaluation

Assuming purchase of the machines and ongoing commitment from both Au and the hospital, further training may take place in 2025 — with Au bringing another sonographer.

The success of Au’s intervention also provides impetus to explore a visit by an Australian radiologist to improve confidence and competency using the hospital's existing advanced radiology suite.
